For example, if you inherit a legacy totally in an unanticipated way, it is your yoga that brought it your way. It is quite a common word in its usage, meaning luck, in India. Sample this: He had a bad yoga; he lost his business in the storm .

Then, How Come It Came To Be Known As A Different Exercise Cult?
It is quite simple. The four manifestations of yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Raja Yoga, and Jnana Yoga, fundamentally preach different ways of attaining salvation or moksha or the eternal freedom; freedom from deaths and lives; freedom from good and evil. Although there are deviations to all four main forms of yoga, there is a common thread binding them in an innocuous way. That it is the means of spiritual enlightenment. Taking a cue from here, another relatively later manifestation called as Hatha Yoga , preaches the same thing as the other four, considered by ordinary people as difficult to practice, but emphasizes more on physical health.

Hinduism has a lot of literatures and treatises written on all four forms plus the Hatha Yoga. Patanjali, one prominent of them, is credited as being the proponent of yogasanas as yoga is known popularly today. The word yogasana is a conjugate word of yoga and asana. Yogasana combines the benefits of physical postures, in a scientific sequence, performed under extreme concentration on controlling the mind and breath, for physical benefits.

Yoga and Exercises
Yoga is a popular short word for yogasana after it reached west. Yoga is practiced after proper coaching like any other exercising method. Each step in any posture is defined and regulated to precision. When yoga is practiced, practitioners chant mantras which help practitioners hold the postures steps till the mantra ends. The steps can also be followed by chanting simple OM .

OM is believed to be the first sound the human being heard from the Creator. To chant OM, one needs to relax the mind beforehand and slowly chant for a length of time, which is entirely decided by the chanter to his or her entire comfort, which does not strain the lungs. The longest effortless single breath chant is the naturally needed length of OM. Change your yogasana step at the end of each OM and proceed further till end.

What we discussed is the simplest class of yoga. Breath control is equally important for yoga to benefit you in any way. Pranayama, which regulates the oxygen supplies to our blood, must be associated with yoga practice.

By: NamSing Then -

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

NamSing Then is a regular article contributor on many topics. Key in the word 'meditation' or 'yoga' and you are going to be overwhelmed by a multiplicity of choice. Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga, Hatha Yoga, The Kabbalah, Tibetan Buddhism, Kundalini Yoga, Krishnamurti's Choiceless Awareness, Zen, Vippasana meditation, the Ramana Maharshi meditation or perhaps Sahaja Yoga. There are many more.

Well help is at hand. Daniel Goleman has written a book called "Meditative Mind" in which he classifies all the different meditations in terms of the Vissudhimagga that was taught by the Lord Buddha. The Vissushimagga means the path of purification. There are two basic types of meditation: the path of concentration and the path of insight.

Thoughts enter your mind in a random manner. There is no pattern to their entry. The path of concentration has you direct the flow of your thoughts, fixing them onto the object chosen for the meditation. By forcing your wandering thoughts back on to the object your mind will eventually become absorbed in it and your awareness will experience a feeling of oneness with it. This is called the "point of entry."

The start of insight meditation is the practice of mindfulness. You are required to pay attention to your thoughts and senses as they arise and to merely register or note your observation of the thought or sense impression without further comment, reflection or judgement. You simply pay attention to what is happening in and to you. In the beginning as in the path of concentration your mind will wander until you reach the point of bare insight where your mind develops the ability to observe all that is registering in your mind without the interference of wandering thoughts. With the achievement of bare insight you realise that your awareness is different from the object of your awareness.

Once you have reached the point of entry or of bare insight you then continue to achieve higher and higher levels of awareness until eventually you reach the highest state possible, which is variously called Nirvana, Nirodh, Moksha and various other names. This state indicates that you have achieved the point whereby you have acquired total self-knowledge and are freed from the perpetual cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

What actually happens here is that your kundalini awakens and rises up the central subtle spiritual channel called the Sushumna. The kundalini is the dormant spiritual power within each one of us, which resides in our pelvic bone. The disadvantage with either of the two paths of the Vissuddimagga is that normally it takes a very long time to get your self-realisation. More than one lifetime is not unusual. Remember that the Vissuddimagga means the 'Path of Purification'. This refers to the fact that in addition to meditation the seeker has to purify his spiritual centres called chakras one by one. This is why the Indian yogis go to the Himalayan Mountains or the forests. They isolate themselves in order to concentrate on their spirit and not be interrupted by mundane life.

In the modern world it is well nigh impossible for the ordinary seeker to achieve their self-realisation using the paths of the Vissuddhimagga. There has however been a change in the firmament and it is now possible to achieve your self-realisation through taking to Sahaja Yoga. As impossible as it seems you can now get your self-realisation simply by asking for it. Any Sahaja yogi can give self-realisation. It is like one candle lighting another. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi developed Sahaja Yoga. She is a very high spiritual personality and can be described as a messenger from God.

With the Vissuddimagga you have to be spiritually perfect before you can get your self-realisation. With the Sahaja Yoga you are not perfect but you can work on trying to become spiritually perfect. The point is that your kundalini does the work for you. All that you have to do is to introspect on your self during meditation. What's wrong with me? The path of Sahaja Yoga is a much faster and easier method of achieving spiritual perfection than the two Vissuddimagga paths. It's like putting the roof on the house first and then building up the walls and windows etc rather than the conventional way around.

The methods used by the Vissuddimargga meditation work by trying to subdue the mind. Sahaja Yoga says that instead of trying to subdue or control the mind, which is almost impossible anyway, why not ignore it and simply go beyond it. The Sahaja Yoga meditation is described as thoughtless awareness. Normally it is virtually impossible to do this but in Sahaja Yoga your kundalini simply takes you straight into thoughtless awareness.

In their book 'From Here to Nirvana' Anne Cushman and Jerry Jones say that there are five types of yoga: Jhana, Bhakti, Karma, Raja and Hatha. Ramana Maharshi was a Jnana yogi who taught that thinking the thought 'Who am I' would eventually lead to self-realisation. This is the mind being used to distinguish between the real and the unreal. Bhakti yoga is the path of love, devotion, and worship. Karma yoga is the path of selfless service. The Karma yogi does not renounce the world but rather seeks to serve humanity in a detached, egoless manner. This leads to self-realisation. Raja yoga is the path taught by the saint Patanjali around the second and third centuries AD. It is a systematic eight-fold path, which works through the quietening of the mind. Raja yoga includes a moral code, positive breath control and a meditation akin to the ' path of concentration' talked about above. Hatha yoga is the classic 'exercise' yoga well known to people in the west. Raja and Hatha yoga are usually associated together. Sahaja Yoga includes elements of all the different types of yoga except Hatha Yoga.

References. (1) From Here to Nirvana. 1998. Anne Cushman and Jerry Jones. (The word "yoga" from the Sanskrit root yuj ("to yoke") is generally translated as "union of the individual atma (loosely translated to mean soul) with Paramatma, the universal soul." This may be understood as union with the Divine by integration of body, mind, and spirit.

Raja Yoga involves exact meditation techniques which lead to experiences of the truth and finally achieve liberation, described in Hindu thought as moksha. ( or liberation from the cycle of birth and death).

Raja Yoga is a very practical guide for gaining control over the mind.

Raja Yoga getting control of the mind

Without this control, meditation is not possible, and therefore the goal of any yoga, unattainable.

Moreover in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, "Yogas chitta vritti nirodhah," or, "The restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff is Yoga! Raja Yoga shows how to achieve this.

8 Principles of Raja Yoga

Raja Yoga is also known as Ashtanga (8 limbed) Yoga which refers to the eight principles which are:

Yama; or the Code of conduct that is, self-restraint

Niyama; religious observances - commitments to practice, study and devotion

Asana: integration of mind and body through physical activity

Pranayama: regulation of breath leading to integration of mind and body

Pratyahara: abstraction of the senses, withdrawal of the senses of perception from their objects

Dharana; concentration, one-pointedness of mind

Dhyana: meditation (quiet and non-sensual activity that leads to samadhi)

Samadhi; the quiet state of blissful awareness, superconscious state

It must be remarked that although called eight-limbed, it is really a Royal Road to self-realization, with each limb leading into the next, ending with the goal, or Samadhi (and the union sought).

Raja Yoga taking control

More easily explained, first you must learn self-control. Without it nothing that follows is possible. In conjunction with the self-control, you must practice religious observances, and seek to expand your quality of devotion. These two lead to Asana, or an integration of mind and body.

At this stage, you are ready to begin control over the breath, which is main life force that animates our existence. As in each subsequent practice led the way to the next, so this stage prepares one for crucial stage of meditation.

Control of the breath is basic to this, and indeed, automatically assists in the next phase of Pratyahara, where you learn to turn off all the senses, and become internalized (not affected by sensatory stimulation).

This is the control you need to approach Dharana, or single-pointedness. From this point, meditation is said to begin. All the rest was preparatory for it and to it.

Raja Yoga getting to meditation

Finally one arrives at Dhyana, which is mediation. Your senses are internalized, your breath is controlled, your mind is thus free from the stuff that keeps it perpetually busy.

Once in true mediation, the road leads directly to Samadhi. In Samadhi you are in harmony with all creation, and non-creation, and are yourself the five principles or Yamas, which are: Ahimsa - of the refraining from injury (non-life supporting action)

Satya which is truthfulness

Asteya of the freedom from stealing

Bramacharya which is living within the Self (moderation; abstinence)

Aparigraha or the freedom from attachment to possessions Having attained this, you are considered in perfection and able to feel one with your creator. This is the goal of all yoga, but in Royal Yoga, the path is easily set out, and if followed without deviation, you may arrive just there.

By: Sacha Tarkovsky

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

More on Yoga For more on Yoga and other alternative fitness health and well being topics, visit our website for features, articles, and magazines: www.net-planet.org

Prenatal Yoga

We all realize the natural aches and pains that come with pregnancy and as a woman we accept each one but there is another way to take care of the pain and that is through pregnancy yoga. Yoga for women has been very popular since they play the role of working mother and wife. Being a successful woman involves constantly balancing between jobs, education, and family. Yoga is a successful way for women to heal their bodies and minds. It can help them deal well with stressful situations and to maintain a positive attitude. An effective tool for good and healthy physical well-being, yoga brings much fruit and harmony to a woman during her months of pregnancy.

A time when life is blossoming within a woman, regular practice of certain yoga exercises, meditation and breathing techniques will ensure that she is totally fit both in mind, body and spirit, thereby will be able to influence her unborn child who is connected to her emotionally and spiritually.

A combination of yoga postures (mudras), breathing exercises (pranayama) and relaxation techniques, will not only aid the pregnant woman, but will enhance her body with vital energy, physical flexibility and agility. The word means "I bow to you" and is often used when either greeting someone or when departing.

Namaste yoga is beneficial as is any other kind of yoga. It is based on that Hatha Vinyasa style of yoga, and with this type of yoga, the breath is the guide and the body then follows in time. Yoga is a wonderful exercise, and this kind of yoga is just one of the many different types of yoga that you can choose to participate in. History would relay that this system of healing dated back about three thousand years ago, Namaste yoga is a kind of Thai massage with roots that can be traced back in India.

The tell-tale Namaste yoga pose is to hold the hands in a praying fashion at the heart, and with eyes closed the head is bowed. In addition, the praying hands can start out at the third eye, which is in the center of the forehead. Then while bowing the head, the hands are brought down to the heart. It is often practiced at the end of a session because the mind and body are relaxed and detached. This is also in keeping with the fact that it is a gesture used in saying hello or goodbye.

Generally, the Namaste yoga practice is used in conjunction with other yoga practices. For example, a group could, as a sign of respect, hold the hands to together and bow the head to each other. Then, the group could proceed to do the sun salutation or any other yoga poses. Then, when the session has come to an end, the group again can use the Namaste yoga bow as a conclusion to the class.

I have a tendency to do too much and Namaste yoga is all about relaxing into the poses. The core of Namaste yoga is combined with the principles of Gautama Buddha, a guru from India and the father of Buddhism. The core of Namaste yoga is combined with the principles of Gautama Buddha, a guru from India and the father of Buddhism.

As with any kind of yoga, it should be remembered that it is a way of life, rather than just something you do to stay flexible and in shape. That's not to say that if you are not serious about yoga then you shouldn't do it. Of course, everyone can benefit from it. However, if you are interested in Namaste yoga you are likely not just looking to get in shape. Since properly performing the various yoga positions is difficult, it requires daily practice until you are able to perform with minimal difficulty.

By: Rich Fatooh

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

Receive free yoga tips by signing up for our free yoga newsletter. Well, another form of this ancient exercise is one that apparently is gaining a lot of popularity, it s known as Nude Yoga.

Not that I m much of a guru to pass judgment, but if I were to be asked what I thought about doing yoga poses without clothing I would say, I think the concept is...okay, especially if privacy is involved.

Heck, on some hot summer afternoons, I ve done some poses naked in my room.

Moreover, the word gymnasium is from latin which means to 'exercise nude' and yes without the constriction of clothes, you could derive a lot of benefits from executing some yoga poses without clothing, but folks, really...moderation is still of an essence.

Now, I did look at some sites on the subject of naked yoga and doing yoga poses without clothing and its objective is to enable you to feel free in your body and to do the poses and exercises without restrictions brought about by Yoga clothes.

Needless to say, this poses a new challenge for Yogis, since the concept of practicing Yoga while being naked is hard to grasp for most people,

Let s face it, not unless one is used to it, doing yoga poses without clothing in a class can be really distracting. Worse thing is the fact that the discomfort may hinder you from getting or feeling the essence of Yoga practice.

Still, those parties who advocate doing yoga positions naked, state that the important thing about Nude Yoga is its principle. How do they function? How can they be worked on? This article will look to answer these and other key questions regarding them, as well as give an overview of each of the Chakras that make up the Kundalini Yoga Seven Chakra System. Although, books can easily be written on this topic this document will concentrate on providing the most important aspects of this profound science.

Charkas are the center piece of the Yogic Energetic model of man. Chakra, which literally means wheel, is best thought of as a Multi-Dimensional Energy Vortex. By multi-dimensional I mean that a Chakra bridges across the many dimensions that make up a human being. According to Yoga there are 4 bodies that constitute a complete human being. These are the physical body, psychic or astral body, the mental body and finally the causal body. Chakras reside in the astral body, and serve as transformers to move energy between these various bodies.

The astral body can be thought of an etheric double of the physical body. Through it runs a vast complex of channels (nadis) that carry the energy of life (prana, chi or life-force). The quality and quantity of prana flowing through the nadis determines the health of the Chakras with reside there. The Chakras, as we mentioned are energy vortexes. They are opened and balanced by this flow of prana. The Chakras lie along the spine from the base to the top of the head and there are seven main Chakras. Each of these Chakras govern the physical region where they are situated and also, are responsible for certain emotional and personality traits. As they are properly activated and energized by the correct flow of prana, the corresponding physical regions are rejuvenated and emotions of a higher quality are embraced.

The seven Chakras and their main areas of influence, both physical and emotional are given below. The format is Chakra Name: Location: Primary Physical Influence: Primary Emotional/Personality Influences.

1. Mooladhara (Root) Chakra: Perineum: Excretory Systems: Physical Security & Fear

2. Swadhisthana (Sex) Chakra: Base of the Spine: Sexual Systems: Self-Expression & Creativity

3. Manipura (Naval) Chakra: Solar Plexus: Digestive Systems: Willpower & Anger

4. Anahata (Heart) Chakra: Center of the Chest: Circulatory and Respiratory Systems: Love

5. Vishuddhi (Throat) Chakra: Throat: Auditory and Speech Systems: Communication

6. Ajna (3rd Eye): Center of head, directly in line with center of forehead: Eyes & Perception: Intuition

7. Sahasrara (Crown): Top of Head: Brain and Nervous System: Bliss

Now that we know what Chakras are and what they do, lets see how we can work on them. The key to opening and balancing Chakras is by purifying the Nadis of blockages and increasing the flow of Prana. This is best done through the use of Yoga and Pranayama. Yoga, specifically Kundalini or Kriya Yoga, and Pranayama are the essentially the science of Chakra Activation. They are designed to systematically dissolve the debris that collects and blocks the flow of energy through the nadis. When the flow increases, the Chakras are opened and, over time, become optimally balanced. This leads to higher levels of awareness and consciousness -- which is to say that it leads to a human being achieving their highest potential.

About the Author
Anmol Mehta is a Kundalini Yoga Teacher and Zen Expert. They will give you the ability to meditate and calm yourself. The props are necessary for the inner body and the mind. The props are a variety of things including essential oils, incense, jewelry, chimes, and others. Below is listed some of the props that are used for yoga and ones that you should think about using for your routine.

1. Incense - you will find a plethora of scents for yoga. Two such scents are well known and they are jasmine and lavender. They are thought to be the better scents to help to calm your mind and get rid of stress. Even though these are more common, the scent you choose should be one that you like. Your mind and personality will tell you what the better fragrance is for you. They will need to have a calming effect on you and your emotions.

2. Essential Oils - these fragrances do more than smell good. They will also address any other problems you are having. They will give you a good attitude and will help your lungs. The essential oils come from the roots, stems, flowers, and leaves of organic plants and are made into blends and mixed with carrier oils. They are mainly used for your physical and your mental health. Aromatherapy oils will give you the balance you need to calm your mind and body and to bring about the right kind of spirit.

3. Jewelry - something that will not make an impact on the yoga but will give you the inspiration you need to devote yourself to the yoga. It will provide you with a way to become involved with the yoga and the symbols of it.

4. Yoga Chimes - these will give you a relaxing sound and will provide you with a balanced and peaceful place to do the yoga. They will boost your spirit helping you to get rid of the bad vibes by giving you a positive energy. They are used in the doorway and will give those who visit a safe and peaceful feeling as they go under them. The old musical notes that are common in the orient and will give the body, mind, and spirit, a healing balance, synchronize the large part of the chimes used in yoga.

Using other items in yoga will help to provide you with a physical and mental calm and a spiritual awareness. There is no consecutive proof that these items will heal you, they will however, give you the yoga environment you will be able to have fun with and enjoy.

About the Author

You can also find more info on Yoga Pants and Yoga Supplies. Being able to do this can benefit both you and your baby, and can make your pregnancy far more comfortable and enjoyable. Exercise, as most people know, is a great way to reduce stress and increase relaxation, and when you are pregnant an ideal form of exercise that can help you to do this is yoga.

Like other forms of yoga, Iyengar yoga focuses on poses known as asanas, and breath control, known as pranayama. With a range of postures and breathing methods in use, Iyengar yoga is suitable for people of varying abilities and experience. If you've never done yoga before, there are beginner classes, and special pregnancy classes at most centers.

Practicing yoga whilst pregnant

Exercise is the ideal way to reduce stress and relax, but regular exercise can be difficult for women that are pregnant. However, Iyengar yoga is a great way for pregnant women to release stress, relieve strain, and enjoy health benefits for themselves and their babies. When taking Iyengar yoga during pregnancy you should be able to enjoy your pregnancy more.

The Iyengar yoga pregnancy method enables up and coming mothers to use props that will help them to gain maximum benefit from their yoga without the risk of strain or injury. It is said that the postures and breathing methods that are used with Iyengar yoga are perfect for getting into shape for the birth of the baby, which is great news for mothers-to-be worried about childbirth.

A number of benefits can be gained from the use of Iyengar yoga during pregnancy, and this includes strengthening of the pelvis, reduction in lower back pain that can arise during pregnancy, improved blood circulation for the mother and unborn baby, easing of stress and tension, easing of fatigue, and strengthening of internal organs.

Postures are usually varied from the regular yoga asanas during pregnancy classes, to accommodate a woman's growing abdomen, and a greater need for support. As the abdomen grows, a woman's sense of balance will change. Also, it is better for pregnant women to move through a variety of yoga poses, in a gentle type of dance, rather than the more traditional method of holding poses for a number of breaths. This has the effect of taking pressure off the lower back, creating flexibility in the joints, and facilitating deeper breathing which increases the oxygen available to baby.

Practicing Iyengar yoga before the birth of the baby is a very good way to practice your breathing too, an important skill when you're in labor. Being able to get to grips with proper breathing methods can make the whole experience of childbirth less stressful.

When you practice the Iyengar yoga pregnancy methods you can really make the most of the time that you are pregnant, and you can ease the discomfort, tiredness, and even the stress that can come with pregnancy, and heighten the experience by improving your health and well being. By developing strong leg, arm, and back muscles, the little things that many women struggle with late in their pregnancy, like getting up from a chair or out of bed, will be much easier.

By: Rebecca Prescott

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

Learn more about prenatal yoga exercises here, and the benefits of practising yoga here.

Bikram Yoga : The Hot Experience

Bikram yoga is a unique experience, to say the least. We've all thought of yoga as a body-bending, flexibility and mind-relaxation exercise, but what's Bikram yoga all about, and why is it supposed to be such an intense experience as so many say?

Bikram yoga is a specific style of yoga founded by Bikram Choudhury. Bikram yoga is often referred to as hot yoga as it is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees with a humidity of 50%.

The origin of this type of yoga is spiritually derived from Hinduism and regionally from Yoga College of India. Bikram yoga consists of 26 asanas or postures and two breathing exercises.

The word asana translates to the word "seat" which refers to the spirit in relation to the divine. Asanas are intended to lead back to sitting in meditation. Asanas are meant to improve your muscle flexibility and strength.

These moves, called asanas, are supposed to be practiced together with pranayama, or slow breath work for maximum benefit. Breathing should be through the nose and natural. To receive maximum benefit from practicing asanas, all tension and tightness in the body should consciously be let go.

A glass of water before practicing asanas enhances the experience and asanas should not be done on a full stomach. The practice of Bikram yoga is meant not only to improve muscle strength and flexibility, but also to establish a balance of our physical beings in relation to the divine.

Yoga is a path to attain a balance of the body, mind and spirit. Yoga can, if done correctly, be a means to control the ongoing complaint in all of our lives, stress. Optimum health is the ultimate goal for everyone of us. Health does not just refer to our physical beings but also to our mental attitudes and spiritual growth.

Bikram or hot yoga addresses emotional as well as physical well being and flexibility. When I visited my daughter in California, she signed me up for my first experience with hot yoga. Being in my fifties, I was a little concerned about the prospect of being a complete amateur at any kind of yoga and the possibility of being the oldest participant in the class.

Well, I wasn't the oldest in the class and the instructor was patient with his teaching. I was happily surprised at my ability to do so many of the postures. My self realization during the hot yoga class was my need to "stress" or hurry up at all times.

I needed to remind myself to relax, breathe slowly and through my nose. The heated room was something I thought I would not be able to tolerate. The fact that the room was so hot and the humidity was so high may seem like an added burden, but in fact, I believe this was the reason I did not come away with muscle aches the next day.

During some of the postures, I was keenly aware of my need to improve my balance and my sense of my physical position in space. For ongoing achievement of balance, I have been practicing the art of yoga via an instructional DVD in my home.

Particularly useful to me, in addition to the improvement of balance is the yoga reminds me to slow down and relax the tension in my body. The concept of the heated room in Bikram yoga is to diminish the risk of injuries and to allow you to go deeper into each posture.

The perspiration experienced during hot yoga enhances the release of toxins. The postures consist of warm up poses that can be done prior to a yoga class. There are standing poses and seated poses. The twist yoga poses have the purpose of strengthening your back, toning the abdomen and helping with digestion.

Inverted poses help you with your circulation. There's supine and backbend poses and finally the finishing poses to end your yoga session with relaxation.

Bikram yoga is designed to assist you to lose weight, tone muscles and increase blood circulation. Since this form of yoga helps lower stress levels, it can improve mental clarity and focus. The relaxation and focus on one's self and inner reflection and complete oneness with one's body allows us to focus more on our lives and even on the job.

By:

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

Danna Schneider is the cofounder of Dieting and Weight Loss News , where you can find information on weightloss products, fitness equipment and diet reviews, and dieting tips for losing weight. Known for its magical feats and the famous rope trick, India is a land that has always exuded charm. Yoga is a tradition in India and is seen as a means to enlightenment. Yoga is of four basic types, Karma, Bhakti, Jnana and Raja Yoga. Karma deals with action in the world, Jnana deals with knowledge and intellectual endeavor, Bhakti deals with devotion to a deity and Raja yoga deals with meditation. Modern Yoga has taken on a new connotation devoid of any spiritualist with the asanas or postures of hatha yoga included in fitness regimen. This has essentially led to many self designed types of yoga and is a lucrative business. Yoga essentially means enlightenment and is central to Hinduism and offshoots of Hinduism. Modern Yoga practice has inherited a few elements from this ancient tradition. Breathing exercise (pranayama) and meditation is the most popular of these. Yoga has a unique ability to relax a person and this is adopted by persons who do not look for enlightenment but for its utility to health of mind and body The goals of Yoga are expressed differently by different traditions. The goals of modernism are relaxation and distressing of a person. With this in mind we have a number of tailored programs Yoga for beginners, Yoga for Women , Yoga for Children , Yoga for heart, etc. are the advertisements you would see to entice people to join a yoga fitness center. The common form of Yoga is the practice of concentration. The focus of meditation is different from school to school. Heart (anahata), or third eye (aina) are major points of focus, meditation on peace or Deities is another form. Hatha yoga was invented as purification so that meditation can be done with ease.

Physical purification, Moral Discipline, and meditation are the basics of yoga. There is a far wider reality which often gets forgotten in modern fitness practices. It is sorry to see that instead of holism practiced another view of yoga is propagated. Blinding the horse to see only in one direction is what the market forces have done to Yoga. Enlightenment is left far behind in our globalization and commercialization. Hatha yoga is only viewed for its health benefits and not for its enlightenment.

Health Benefits * It is believed to calm the nervous system. * It helps to balance the body, mind, and spirit * It follows the same principles as life energy and helps prevents specific diseases. * It is used to reduce blood pressure and stress * It improves sleep, coordination, flexibility, concentration and digestion. * Alternative remedies suggest it as a therapy for cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, asthma and Irritable Bowel Syndrome * It is helps in treatment of spinal problems and chronic back pain.

Yoga as a healing alternative is now the most popular form and very few look towards yoga as a means toward enlightenment.

About the Author

Yogamiracles.com is a site of the various benefits of yoga. Yoga videos or DVDs, unlike classes, are time efficient. This is because you can practice yoga anytime you like, in your living room or bedroom.

It is also much more convenient because you can pop in a video/DVD whenever you like. You can practice with famous yoga teachers in the comfort of your own home and at your own pace. No trying to keep up with the rest of the Yogazons at the gym or thinking you have to buy the right yoga outfit to fit in with the rest of the class.

Bryan Kest is a famous U.S. yoga instructor. By using a yoga video/DVD you can practice with him even if you live in Australia!

With yoga videos/DVDs you can also choose which practice to do and what you need at a specific time. It might focus on stress reduction, one that helps your lower body, or one that helps build your core. It might also focus on what suits your physical situation such as yoga for seniors or pregnancy yoga.

You could also modify the postures according to your physical condition. For example, if you have an injured foot and cant put any pressure on the front of it you could modify a number of poses such as the Plank Pose (where you put your knees down so as not to bear the entire weight of your body on only your forefoot).

Yoga videos/DVDs offer variety and assortment. Its so easy to get bored doing the same poses over and over again for however many sessions. Interest and enthusiasm is lost when there is a lack of diversity.

With these videos, one can enjoy his or her own favorite posture or physical exercise. And you can play them or practice them as long as you like without restrictions and delays.

You get to choose when and where you want to do it. Aside from that, you get to enjoy and feel like you really are relaxing and feeling the essence of Yoga. Some say its like being in heaven ahead of time.

As a result, you will find comfort and enthusiasm that really has to be felt during Yoga activities. Aside from that, practicing with Yoga videos/DVDs saves time and effort.

Finally, the time you waste going to a yoga class could be spent on doing something else you love.

Want To Destress Your Body And Mind With Yoga? They are made of synthetic materials, all natural materials, and combinations there of. Plus yoga mats can be purchased to compliment any persons taste or style.

There are a few basic categories of yoga mats: sticky mats, natural fiber mats, and natural rubber/vinyl mats. Each mat has its benefits depending on the type of yoga, the person s individual preference of feel, and the budget allowed for the item. Every store or website a person will search for yoga mats will be faced with many products that all look the same, each claiming to be the best. The best yoga mat is really in the eyes of the beholder.

Some people which are interested in the mat for power yoga (also known as hatha yoga) will be doing more physical activity and are likely to sweat more. For this reason a natural fiber such as cotton or other natural woven fibers would give a better grip while sweating. People interested in using the mat for complete forms of yoga that include relaxation and meditation will want a longer and possibly thicker mat designed for lying stretched out flat. Many of these mats will be made from natural rubber or vinyl depending on the manufacturer.

For stretches and balancing poses many people prefer the security of a sticky mat. These mats are made of PVC a synthetic material which is designed to help people keep their grip. The mats are often light weight and easy to carry.

Buying Basics

Regardless of the exact material to be used for the mat, there are a few basic considerations to be taken with any yoga mat. The yoga mat should be durable; to test the durability some people use a quarter to rub away at a sample of the material counting the strokes. At the end of the test, this person can deduct that the mat that was able to withstand the largest number of strokes is the most durable.

A yoga mat should also be easy to care for. Much like clothing, yoga mats which are machine washable are preferable to mats which require hand washing or other special care. Yoga mats are frequently used on public floors, for sanitation and personal comfort machine washable mats will fit the bill.

Most machine washable mats cannot withstand the spin cycle, for maximum life of the mat it should be removed and allow to air dry flat or hanging. Rolling the mat or folding it before it has had time to dry can also affect its longevity.

By: Ann Marier -

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

Ann Marier writes informative articles on general health issues providing helpful tips and advice. A psychophysical discipline that has become the most popular form of exercise practiced worldwide, it has changed the course of millions and is gaining popularity in every remote corner of the world. Yoga dates back to 5000 years. It originated as a form of exercise in which stress was laid on physical postures and breathing. Meditation yoga is known as the purest form of soul searching and food of the soul. It took years of research, practice and knowledge for Yoga to emerge as the present day perfect form of body mind yoga exercises.

In literal terms Yoga means Union. In more spiritual terms it means union of your body with soul. Every year thousands of tourists get attracted to the Indian subcontinent in search of the roots of its origin. And of late, fitness yoga regime is gaining popularity worldwide. Yoga has also been included in some schools curriculum.

Unlike gym exercises, fitness yoga does not pump up your biceps or tone your abs, but it definitely takes you towards a healthy living. It is far removed from the normal sit up and push-up regime that most of us indulge in, while listening to deafening music. On the other hand fitness yoga stresses on meditating during performing specific postures. Therefore it has a healing effect on both mind and body. The yogic postures not only make body stronger and leaner but also increase flexibility. Yoga is said to be a cure for complex problems like arthritis, gastric problems, hypertension and in more recent times also for dreaded diseases like cancer. Fitness yoga also improves concentration and helps in loosing weight naturally. And the best part of this fitness regime is the fact that it does leave any side effects even when one discontinues it.

In this hi-tech age when we do not have time to live healthy lifestyles, this fitness mantra acts as a boon. It not only keeps body in shape but also releases stress. Breathing postures, meditation, laughter yoga and others help keep many respiratory problems at bay. Yoga coupled with laughter has proven to be an effective laughter medicine therapy. So, just add a little Yoga and see the amazing difference it can make to your life.

By: Vishwa

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

Vishwa Prakash is a well known writer who writes on topics like Fitness Yoga, Laughter Meditation etc for the site www.yogalaff.com

Christian Yoga?

There is an interesting article in the September 5th issue of Time magazine.
This particular article covers a spectrum of opinions about mixing Christianity with Yoga. Even, if you don t agree with a single opinion, it s a good read, as long as you remain objective.

Over the course of time, I have been lucky enough to teach, or practice, with someone from every known religious denomination; so the statement by a
Professor Tiwari at the Hindu University of America, where he states that, Yoga is Hinduism, is surprising, coming from a scholar. Possibly, this statement was taken out of context, but fundamentalism exists, to a degree, in every form of religion.

If some Christians want to practice Yoga to make a closer connection to God, who are any of us to criticize it? Isn t one of Yoga s purposes, the union of self with a Supreme Being? So what is the big deal?

Truthfully, many fundamentalists are all about division - keeping the masses divided, at war with each other, and preferably, in a holy war. They fear the unity of mankind, letting go of power, and world peace. They don t want to loosen their grip on their followers, so they squeeze a little more.

So if a Christian group wants to practice Son Salutations , or PraiseMoves, give them a break. Yoga is practiced in sectarian atmospheres by a variety of different religions. Nobody has a monopoly on Yoga. Yoga is a complete health maintenance system for mind, body, and spirit.

There is a type of Yoga for everyone, and some people want a little more spiritual flavor than others. Since Yoga has been around for at least 5,000 years, there is a very big variety to choose from.

As for skeptics who point the finger at each other - He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone It might be best if we all practice a little more mindfulness, and loving kindness, before we decide to criticize things we don t understand.

Yoga is out of the bag. It is no longer practiced by a particular group. Therefore, Yoga is a public treasure, and not a genie that we will confine to a bottle. No matter how many people try to patent, or copyright, Yoga, it will be practiced within every corner of the earth.

So, please read the article in Time magazine and enjoy it, but take the time to remain objective. Recognize motives and words for their hidden agenda. Most of all, remain in good relations with your fellow man.

By: Paul M. This article is not disputing any of those claims out there but to show you how I deal with fitness, working out and doing aerobics, pilates, stretching, abdominals, flexing and yoga. I see many types of women who are actually keeping themselves in shape and doing a great job at it. My specialty is legs and glutes. There are many tests that I use to help women get themselves looking great. I will deal with some of them as of course the rest requires private and discrete consultation such as strip aerobics, techniques to build an upper chest and abs but there are other tests which I think is not apropriate here such as ab hugs and the glute tuck. When this happens many of us as back pain sufferers will be given treatment advice that doesn't really treat the underlying causes of our back pain, focusing instead on simply trying to manage the symptoms with painkillers and other drugs.

But clinical studies have found that most forms of low back pain respond well to conservative (non-surgical) treatments. These simple treatments can really address the causes of the pain and provide lasting relief.

Exercise is nature's cure

As counter-intuitive as it may seem at first, one of the most effective treatments for lower back pain is exercise - regardless of the underlying cause of the back pain. Exercise is crucial to build and maintain a healthy cardiovascular system as well as being essential for the development of muscle strength. This has particular importance in relation to lower back pain because a leading cause of back pain is weak or unbalanced development of muscles in the back, abdomen or legs. Clearly avoiding exercise when we suffer from back pain is only going to further weaken our muscles and make us more susceptible to back pain.

Exercise treatment for lower back pain focuses on the extensor and rotator/oblique muscles in the back to build strength and support for the spine. At the same time we need to build abdominal muscle strength to build our flexion strength in balance and proportion to our extension strength. Finally back pain exercises should help us to build suppleness in our hamstrings to aid the unrestricted motion of our hips and pelvis since restricted movement of the pelvis increases the strain on the lower back.

Yoga is the natural cure for back pain

Because of the gentle nature of yoga and its effectiveness in building muscle strength and flexibility, a regular yoga practice is ideal for the prevention and treatment of lower back pain. Those of us that are not particularly strong or supple are likely to benefit the most from yoga as a cure for lower back pain.

Specifically tailored routines of yoga postures, can be effective in treating axial and referred back pain, slipped and damaged spinal disks as well as radicular back pain including sciatica and piriformis. Although all of these types of back pain respond well to gentle extension of the back, through back bends, the first step in using yoga exercise as a cure for back pain is understanding the type of back pain from which we are suffering. Different types of back pain respond to different yoga poses so only by understanding the cause of our back pain can we apply the correct cure. But more importantly, we need to know which exercises to avoid so we can prevent further injury, for example, if we are suffering from a slipped disk then we should avoid flexion of the back (forward bends).

Getting started with yoga to cure back pain

Of utmost importance when using yoga to treat back pain is finding suitable instruction. First you need to find a school that teaches the right kind of yoga. Many yoga schools in the west teach a dynamic or flowing form of yoga known as Vinyasa. The constant movement of this type of yoga means that you enter and exit poses very quickly which is not really suitable for the lower back pain sufferer. To avoid further injury, yoga poses should be entered and exited slowly allowing for gentle movement so we can check our correct alignment and notice pain that may be an indicator of further injuries to soft tissues in the back. Ashtanga, Power yoga, Viniyoga and Bikram yoga are all types of flowing Vinyasa yoga and may not be suitable for the effective treatment of back pain.

Once we have found a yoga center that teaches the right style of yoga we need to check out the teacher. We need to find a teacher that is experienced in practicing and teaching yoga, because their knowledge of designing a yoga routine and describing each pose is an essential part of our yoga experience. Ideally we should look for a teacher who is experienced in treating back pain so they can tailor the routines to our specific condition, abilities and needs.

Learn what you need to know about lower back pain and how yoga provides exercises for lower back pain. With a degree in Ayurveda traditional Indian medicine and a master degree in yoga therapy, Varun Veer provides a wealth of information on a quick and natural end to back pain.

About the Author

Jez Heath is helping real people learn yoga online so they can make the commitment necessary to improve their yoga and their health - mind, body and soul. For centuries, yoga experts have taught that by stretching and contracting the body, muscles joints and ligaments can be strengthened and you can relieve all sorts of pain as well. Yoga for back pain has been accepted by many chiropractors and back specialists. Before beginning yoga for back pain, consult your doctor to make sure you don t make matters worse.

Back pain can be caused by a number of situations, from slipped discs to damaged muscles or ligaments. However, back pain can also be caused by infections, bone spurs or tumors. When yoga for back pain is implemented, the pain is reduced by stretching and strengthening the spine. You must exercise proper posture and this should be practiced so that you can get relieved from the back pain even when you re not practicing yoga.

When you sign up for a yoga class, discuss with your instructor about your back pain. Tell them that you re using yoga for back pain so that they won t cause you to contort in ways you shouldn t. You should always start off easy and should refrain from doing more advanced positions.

A good starting out position is called the cobra. You perform the cobra by laying on your front, with your head facing forward. Place your hands on either side of your body as you would if you were doing pushups. Then, push with your hands, while keeping your waist on the floor, and lift your upper torso off the ground. Keep your face forward, not up, and make sure that you are stretching your back slowly. This yoga position for back pain has been known to help a lot of people but it can hurt you if done incorrectly. That s why it s so important to listen to your instructor before trying any position you re not sure of.

Yoga for back pain can help you, but need to be discussed with your doctor. You should be able to find a yoga school in your area. Many YMCA s and health clubs also offer yoga classes, and many are affordable. If you experience back pain and it keeps you from enjoying many of life s activities, then try yoga for back pain and finally live life as you once did.

For more Information check http://www.arthritisreliefhelp.info

By:
Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

Roger Thoompson writes on Arthritis Relief for a Website dedicated to arhritis & pain relief information

Beginner Yoga - Yoga For Digestive Disorders

by Kevin Pederson

Yoga is a very ancient form of exercise which has great abilities to provide solutions to several health related problems even today. This is the reason why great many numbers of people have been practicing yoga regularly for years and living a healthy life, not just healthy body but also healthy mind.

Yoga aims at working towards bringing a balance in mind and body of a person, 'yoga' the word itself means union, i.e. union of body and mind for a healthy living. There is no organ in the body that yoga exercises do not address. Yoga exercises can give relief virtually from any ailment, relating to any organ of the body.

This applies even to gastrointestinal problems faced by us regularly. Yoga for digestive system has a set of exercises or positions, 'asanas' that can provide you complete relief, be it the 'IBS' or irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, constipation, heartburns, etc. Yoga and ayurveda in combination can not just give you relief but also provide you with perfect medication and complete cure from several stomach and digestive order related ailments.

Yoga for digestive disorders is a set of exercises; your yoga instructor will teach you. Rather we are more likely to focus on only 1 of the 8 limbs of yoga - yoga asana.

Yoga asana are the physical positions and postures of yoga that started were really only starting to develop in importance with the development of Hatha Yoga. While exact dates are not well established, yoga has existed for a lot longer than the practice of modern asana.

These asana have been developed over more than 1500 years to promote physical health as part of a greater Hatha yoga practice. Each asana is carefully designed to focus on particular areas of the body. The specific effects of an asana include:

Building strength in specific muscle groups

Stretching specific soft tissues including muscles, ligament and tendons
Opening specific joints

Developing balance and concentration

Massaging and stimulating internal organs

Individually these effects can have significant benefits, but by combining individual asana into a carefully developed and balanced routine the Hatha yoga practitioner can develop their entire physical body, internal organ function and mental clarity.

How do yoga asana work

Although yoga and asana are not considered to be scientific by western definitions, the practice of asana is considered by yoga masters to be very carefully developed and refined based on several well-developed underlying principles and health objectives.

Gravity

One of the key principles of asana is that of gravity. Asana use gravity in a variety of ways, the most important being in developing strength. By resisting body weight on arms or legs the asana can develop upper body or leg strength and muscle tone in the same way a weightlifter would in a gym. With yoga asana the weight being resisted varies only with our own body weight, and each pose can only apply the same amount of body weight meaning that all muscles are developed proportionately so long as each pose is held for an equivalent amount of time. After we can easily hold our body weight in a particular pose, holding the pose for longer builds additional strength and stamina.

Blood flow and nutrients

Blood flow to specific areas of the body brings many health benefits. By working specific muscles, soft tissue and joints, the body brings additional blood flow providing the needed oxygen. This additional blood also brings needed nutrition to those areas, which is essential for general health as well as the speedy recovery from injury and damage. The key way to bring blood to these areas is through stretching. In addition to the increased blood flow, stretching loosens and relaxes soft tissue such as muscles, ligaments and tendons and opens joints, all of which helps to relieve tension and pressure on nerves in these areas.

Deep breathing

During the practice of asana, we are encouraged to control our breath with long deep inhalations and exhalations. In some poses it is even encouraged to still the breath with the lungs full or the lungs empty for periods of 20 seconds to 1 minute. The first benefit of this controlled breathing is to bring our focus and consciousness to the present, to our current actions. By being able to control this focus, we can improve our concentration. Secondly by breathing in this controlled way, we improve the efficiency of our respiratory system, bringing more oxygen to the body and to the organs, muscles and soft tissue being worked on.

Central nervous system and internal organs

Although yoga texts don't tend to describe yoga in the terms used by modern medicine, many of the concepts are analogous to medical structures. With nerves represented as Nadis or energy channels and the Chakras representing key glands. The purpose of asana is to rejuvenate the whole body by conditioning these individual systems to make sure they are working optimally.

One of the key focuses of asana is in on the central nervous system, which comprises the spine and brain. In yoga this could be referred to as the Nadis and crown Chakra. The Central Nervous System is one of the most critical structures in the human body, controlling all movement and thought and passing the control signals to all the nerves throughout the body. Clearly if the function of this core control channel is impeded, it can have an effect on the function of the whole body. One of the plainest examples of this is through back pain and sciatica. Through the misalignment of, or damage to, the spinal disks or vertebrae that protect the spinal cord and root nerves, those same nerves can be pinched or irritated which can lead to intense pain and numbness in the back, as well as referred pain and numbness in the legs or feet. While the causes of damage to the spine can be many and varied, poor posture is a key cause of back pain. Asana for the spine help to bring the fluids that contain the nutrient required to repair the damaged soft tissues and can be effective in healing back problems. However these asana are not always sufficient since poor posture and back pain can also be cause by other elements such as tight hamstring muscles in the back of the legs or gluteus and piriformis muscle groups in the buttocks. Therefore a holistic approach is required to correct the back injury.

Other key systems that asana are designed to address is the glandular and lymphatic systems, particularly the endocrine system. The endocrine glands, which include the thymus, thyroid, pituitary pineal, hypothalamus, adrenal and sex glands release their secretions directly into the blood stream. The secretions made by these glands have an enormously profound effect on the body's health function controlling everything from height and weight to metabolism and emotions. Asana are designed to stimulate these glands in a variety of ways from increasing blood flow to those in the brain (hypothalamus, pituitary and pineal) or thyroid in the neck to gently massage and stimulate through bends and twists of the abdomen.

The next key systems that asana stimulate are the internal organs and digestive systems. Both of these systems are critical to taking in nutrition and expelling waste and toxins from the body, and are particularly important for good health. Asana improve the functioning of these systems through stimulation and gentle massage provided by abdominal bends and twist as well as movement of the hips and legs.

By: Jez Heath

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jez Heath is helping real people learn yoga online so they can make the commitment necessary to improve their yoga and their health - mind, body and soul. Wait ten minutes, take half of the money you would spend and let me show you something better.

Sandbag strength and exercise training is a little known secret. This is old school so not many fitness "experts" are up-to-date on sandbags let alone the general public. Let's take the concept of sandbags and strength training and break it down.

What is a sandbag? A sandbag is a canvas bag (I use my old army duffel bag) with sand and used for a variety of lifting exercises. Bag weight can vary from a few pounds to more than 100 to 200 pounds. The sandbag exercises require strength, endurance and creativity to figure out the best way to lift the sometimes lop-sided weight. Most sandbags are composed of many smaller bags of sand inside the large bag, which makes for easy weight adjustments and less mess. You can do loads & loads of exercises with a sandbag, and remember the exercises can be the same as regular dumbbell exercises and they can be totally unique to sandbag strength training.

Who uses sandbag training? Alot of athletes and alot of regular Joes like me & you. Those who are looking to mix things up a bit and push their body beyond what a typical dumbbell can do. You don't have alot of time-no problem. Sandbag training hits it all.

Why should I know about sandbag strength training? You need to change your workout routine every 4-6 weeks, give or take a week. If you continue to do the same workout your body gets used to that and stops producing results. Sandbag training helps with functional strength. Functional strength is loosely defined as an exercise that mimics a specific task. So if you want to become a better golfer you focus on exercises that mimic a golf swing Sandbag strength training is your answer!

What type of exercises can I do with sandbag training? Any type of exercises you do normally with barbells/dumbbells or your own bodyweight. Sandbags can be used for almost every exercise imaginable, including carries, rows, squats, rotations, lunges, and military presses. Also you can do combos using other movements such as Turkish get-ups, shouldering into squatting, burpees into snatches, clean, squat and press, and thrusters. But wait there's more! Combine walking with movements,. This way you can work on conditioning, static strength, strength/power, all simultaneously. Try walking with a sandbag and every ten steps perform three to five reps of an exercise. Walk and squat, walk and bent-over row, walk and shouldering, walk and then clean and press. This is harder than you think, but oh so beneficial.

For functional strength, weight loss, cardio workout, heck for any type of fitness level you are trying to achieve, sandbag training and exercise is for you.

By: Tracey

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

Tracey has a strong interest in fitness /nutrition, and is an avid martial artist.
